Cowles Named Men's Golf Head Coach

CHICOPEE, MA, May 15, 2009 - Elms College Director of Athletics Louise McCleary announced the hiring of Craig Cowles as head coach of the men's golf program on Friday, June 5.

Coach Cowles brings more than 30 years of high school and collegiate coaching experience to his new position at Elms College, including seven years as the head golf coach at Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA (1997-2004). 

"I am excited that Coach Cowles will be at the helm of our men's golf program.  He has a working knowledge of the local high school golf programs as a former coach at Cathedral high school, and I believe he will bring a strong recruiting effort and stability to our program," said Director of Athletics, Louise McCleary.  "He has a history of success, and it is exciting to have someone of his caliber in our department."

During his time at Cathedral, Coach Cowles amassed a record of 123-52-6.  His teams qualified for the MIAA Western Massachusetts Sectional four times.  In 2000, one of his players was the MIAA Division I Individual State Champion and in 2001, his team was the MIAA Division I State Team Runner Up.

Since 2007, Coach Cowles has also been actively involved in the United States Challenge Cup Junior Golf Tour.  He has been responsible for pin and tee placements as well as acting as an on-course rules official for over 25 Junior Golf Tournaments.

Coach Cowles studied education and business at Springfield College and played three collegiate seasons on the golf team.
