Trinity Wins ECAC Division III New England Men's Golf Championship

CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 7, 2007 - Castleton State College senior Bryan Smith (St. Albans, VT) earned low medalist honors with a two-round total of 1-under par 141 and Trinity College pulled away to win the team title of the 2007 ECAC Division III Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at Chicopee Country Club.

Trinity, which was tied with Nichols for the first round lead of 299, shot 300 en route to a two-day total 599. Nichols was second (607), while UMass-Dartmouth (624), Johnson & Wales (624) and Springfield College (624) all tied for third in the 15-team field.

Sophomores Josh Grossman (Great Neck, NY), David Anderson (Wellesley, MA) and junior Reid Longley (Atlanta, GA) all placed among the top six to help bolster the Bantams' championship effort.

Grossman followed an opening round of even-par 71 with a 5-over 76 on Sunday for a two-round total of 147 to place third overall, Longley finished fifth with a 149 (76-73) and Anderson tied for sixth at 150 (75-75).

As a team over the two rounds, Trinity led the field in both par-4 (4.27) and par-5 (4.95) scoring, was second in total pars (98) and third in birdies (17).

Smith was once again brilliant for Castleton, as he followed up a first round 2-under 69 with a 1-over 72 on Sunday. Smith finished the championship with seven birdies, one eagle and was second in the 75-player field in par-4 scoring (3.94) and third in both par-3 (3.20) and par-5 (4.75) scoring.

Springfield, which was 10th after the first round, tallied the second-lowest total of the tournament with a 305 on Sunday en route to its third place tie.

Freshman Craig DiFranco (East Longmeadow, MA) and junior Greg Levins (Averill Park, NY) helped pace the Pride.

DiFranco, who was tied for 16th following an opening round 77, carded a 2-over 73 on Sunday to finish tied for sixth at 150. Levins, meanwhile, tied for 10th with his two-day total of 153 (76-77).

For Nichols, sophomore Pat Pio (Somers, CT) finished second with a two-round total of 4-over par 146 (70-76) and junior Chris Brock (Pomfret Center, CT) placed fourth with a 6-over par 148 (73-75).

WIT sophomore Rob Beattie (Foxboro, MA) posted a combined 21 pars in his two rounds - eighth-best among all players - to tie for sixth at 150 (76-74), while Johnson & Wales sophomore Bobby Newcomb (Quincy, MA) led the field in par-5 scoring (4.63) and finished ninth overall at 152 (73-79).
