CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 6, 2007 - Castleton State College senior Bryan Smith (St. Albans, VT) carded the low round of the day with a sparkling 2-under par 69, while Trinity College and Nichols College each tallied team scores of 299 for a share of the lead in the opening day of the 2007 ECAC Division III Men's Golf Championship at Chicopee Country Club.

Trinity and Nichols were the only two teams to break 300 in the 15-team field. UMass-Dartmouth (305), Brandeis (308), Endicott (312) and Johnson & Wales (312) rounded out the top five following the first round.

Trinity and Nichols each had two players among the top eight in the 75-player field.

For Nichols, sophomore Pasquale Pio (Somers, CT) stands alone in second place after a first round 1-under par 70 (35-35) while junior Chris Brock (Pomfret Center, CT) is tied for fourth following his 2-over par 73 (38-35). Pasquale led the field with five birdies and shot a combined 4-under on the par-4's for the day.

Sophomores Josh Grossman (Great Neck, NY) and David Anderson (Wellesley, MA) answered for Trinity. Grossman is in third place following his even-par 71 (36-35), while Anderson stands eighth after his 4-over par 75 (37-38).

Smith was sensational for Castleton, as he recorded 12 pars for the round and added birdies on the par-4 6th, par-3 11th, par-5 15th and par-4 18th. He shot even-par 36 in the front nine and 2-under 33 in the back to take the outright lead.

UMass-Dartmouth senior Mark Francis (Acushnet, MA) and Johnson & Wales sophomore Bobby Newcomb (Quincy, MA) stood tied for fourth along with Brock following their opening rounds of 73.  Newcomb led the field in par-5 scoring at 2-under par, while Francis had three birdies - fifth-best among all players.  

Elms College senior Neil Daigneault (Ludlow, MA) is alone in seventh place following an opening-round 3-over par 74. Daigneault started his round with bogeys on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd holes and finished the opening nine with a 40, but answered with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 15th for a 1-under 34 in the back.   

A total of seven players are currently tied for ninth place following first round scores of 76, including Endicott senior Nick Turczak (Housatonic, MA) (39-37), Springfield junior Greg Levings (Averill Park, NY) (37-39), WIT sophomore Rob Beattie (Foxboro, MA) (38-38), Brandeis senior Dan Shani (Waban, MA) (41-35), Trinity junior Reid Longley (Atlanta, GA) (38-38), UMass-Dartmouth senior Andrew Jacobs (Greenfield, MA) (38-38) and Brandeis freshman Charles Sacks (Phoenix, AZ) (36-40).

The final round of the 2007 ECAC Division III New England Championship is set for Sunday, October 7. A shotgun start will begin play at 12:30 p.m.
