No. 13 Men's Basketball Overwhelms Mitchell

CHICOPEE, MA, Jan. 28, 2009 - The 13th-ranked Elms College men's basketball team saw 15 players figure in the scoring in an impressive 108-66 win over Mitchell College Thursday night in a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) contest at the Maguire Center.

Senior forward Malakie Berry (Enfield, CT) and junior guard Juan Galdon (Holyoke, MA) scored 10 points each to lead the Blazers.

Elms College won its sixth straight to improve to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the NECC. Mitchell dropped t 7-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

The Blazers trailed 5-4 in the opening minutes of the game after a layup from sophomore center Jenel Russell (East Hampton, NY) before blowing the game open with a 19-2 run that gave them a 23-7 lead at the 13:57 mark of the first half.

The Blazers led 65-34 at the half and led by as many as 44 after a layin by senior forward Ronald Thomas (Chicago, IL) made the score 92-48 with 10:43 to go in the game.

Senior guard Joe Esile (Milford, CT) and sophomore guard Arsenio Avant (Southwest Ranches, FL) scored nine points each for Elms. Senior guard Aswad Thomas (Hartford, CT) filled the stat sheet with eight points, a game-high 10 assists, four rebounds and four steals.

The Blazers also got eight points from senior forward Antoine Holder (Hartford, CT), junior forward Javon Mathis (West Hartford, CT) and sophomore guard Wayne Waite (Hartford, CT).

Junior center Matt Binder (Milford, CT) scored a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Mitchell. Russell finished with 11 points and junior forward Eric Murray (Bridgeport, CT) added nine points and six boards.

Elms shot 51.1 percent (45-88) from the field and 46.2 percent (12-26) from downtown, while the Mariners shot 44.4 percent (22-52) from the floor and were just 1-12 from beyond the arc.

The Blazers return to action Saturday when they host Daniel Webster in a NECC contest. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
