FARMINGTON, ME, Nov. 22, 2008 - Elms College junior forward Javon Mathis (West Hartford, CT) scored a team-high 16 points and was named Tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) as the No. 25 Blazers posted an 81-67 win over the University of Maine-Farmington in the championship game of the 2008 Hight Chevrolet Tournament at Dearborn Gymnasium.
Mathis was named MVP as he averaged 15.0 points in the two games, including 14 in the Blazers' record-setting 110-44 trouncing of the University of Maine-Presque Isle in Friday night's first round.
Elms College, currently ranked 25th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, remained unbeaten at 4-0. Maine-Farmington, meanwhile, fell to 1-1.
The host Beavers led 15-12 before the Blazers used runs of 9-0 and 10-2 over the final 12 minutes of the first half to build what proved to be an insurmountable 49-35 lead at intermission.
Senior forward Malakie Berry (Enfield, CT) finished with 10 points in just 11 minutes and senior forward Antoine Holder (Hartford, CT) added nine points in 13 minutes for the Blazers, who had a total of 11 players score in the winning effort.
Elms College forced Maine-Farmington into 25 turnovers and held a 35-16 advantage in points off turnovers.
Senior guard Aswad Thomas (Hartford, CT) snagged a game-high four of Elms College's 24 total steals.
The Blazers return to non-conference play when they host Westfield State on Tuesday, November 25. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
