MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO CASTLETON, 89-83

CHICOPEE, MA, Jan. 12, 2008 - Elms College freshman guard Dan Gonzalez (East Windsor, CT) netted a collegiate career-high 15 points, but Castleton junior guard Josh Howe (Randolph, VT) answered with a game-high 23 points and the Spartans had four players reach double figures en route to an 89-83 win over the Blazers in Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Castleton won for the sixth time in its last seven games to improve to 8-5 overall, 1-1 NAC. Elms College lost for the third time in its last four games and fell to 9-4, 2-1 NAC.

The Blazers shot 57.1-percent (20 of 35) from the field in the first half, but led just 49-46 at intermission.

Elms College, however, went cold from the field in the second half, as it shot 36.7-percent from the field. The Blazers also shot just 57.1-percent from the free throw line for the game (12 of 21).

Senior guard Joey Farley (Fairlee, VT), junior guard Kevin Cayea (Red Hook, NY) and senior guard Rich Reilly (Manassas, VA) all finished in double figures to help lift the Spartans to just their third win in 12 all-time meetings against the Blazers.

Farley finished with 18 points, including 12 in the second half, Cayea netted 11 of his 15 points in the opening half and Reilly scored 12 points and handed out a game-high six assists.

Elms College also had four players finish in double figures. Senior guard Randy Hite (Hartford, CT) finished with 14 points, while senior forward Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) and junior guard Aswad Thomas (Hartford, CT) added 10 points apiece.

The Blazers return to non-conference play when they host No. 3 Amherst on Tuesday, January 15. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Castleton returns to play when it hosts Thomas on Friday, January 18. Tip-off is 6:00 p.m.
