MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WESTFIELD STATE, 84-75

CHICOPEE, MA, Nov. 21, 2006 - Elms College senior guard David Williams (Hartford, CT) netted a game-high 26 points, but Westfield State placed four players in double figures and pulled away to an 84-75 win over the Blazers in Tuesday night's non-conference men's basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Westfield State remained undefeated at 3-0, while Elms College lost it first game of the year and fell to 2-1.

Elms College lead just twice in the game's opening 5:20 before Westfield State erupted for a 23-7 run over the next 11:23 to take its largest lead of the first half at 27-13.

The Blazers, who trailed 36-24 at intermission, pulled as close as 67-60 with 5:27 remaining in the game following a 3-pointer by Williams, but could get no closer, as the visiting Owls knocked down 18 of 26 free throws in the second half to seal the victory.

Westfield State senior guard Gavin Illangakoon (Melbourne, Australia) dropped in a team-high 20 points, including a 13 for 16-effort from the free throw line.

Junior guard Ryan Mauer (Pittsfield, MA) scored 18 points, senior forward Curtis Gadles (Pembroke, MA) registered the game's only double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and junior guard Andrew Deffer (Beverly, MA) added 14 points as the other three Westfield State players to reach double figures in Tuesday's victory.

Junior forward Renato Lindmets (Springfield, MA) scored 13 points, and senior point guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) added 10 points and a game-high eight assists in the loss.

Elms College returns to non-conference play next Wednesday, November 29 at WPI. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
