MEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO WPI, 83-65

Box score

WORCESTER, MA, Nov. 29, 2006 - Elms College junior forward Renato Lindmets (Springfield, MA) scored a team-high 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds, but WPI had four players reach double figures, including a game-high 26-point effort from senior guard Ryan Cain (Webster, MA), as the Engineers pulled away to an 83-65 win over the Blazers in Wednesday night's non-conference men's basketball game at Harrington Auditorium.

WPI (4-1) used a 10-0 run over the last 4:45 of the first half to take a 41-30 halftime lead.

The Engineer defense was the key to the spurt, as it forced eight turnovers and limited the Blazers to just one field goal attempt during that span.  Prior to the WPI surge, the opening half had featured nine lead changes and four ties.

The Blazers (2-2) rallied to within 56-51 midway through the second half, but the Engineers netted the game's next five straight points and never looked back en route to victory in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Senior point guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) chipped in with 13 points for the Blazers, while senior guard David Williams (Hartford, CT) registered 11 points, a game-high nine rebounds and a team-best four steals.  Junior forward Nate Hawes (New Hope, MN) added seven boards for the Blazers, who enjoyed a 37-30 edge in rebounding on the night.

Elms College returns to non-conference play when it hosts Hartwick College in the first-ever meeting between those two teams on Saturday, December 2. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at the Maguire Center.
