Field Hockey Advances To NECC Championship

FIELD HOCKEY ADVANCES TO NECC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

NASHUA, NH, Oct. 29, 2008 - Senior forward Sarah Lapolice (West Springfield, MA) netted a goal and added an assist to help lead the Blazers to a 2-1 win at No. 2 Daniel Webster in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday afternoon.

The Blazers (6-12) now advance to play at top-seeded Becker (11-9) in the NECC championship game on Saturday, November 1. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

Becker advanced to the championship game following a 4-1 win over No. 4 Wheelock on Tuesday. 

Lapolice put the Blazers ahead just 17 seconds into the game off a feed from sophomore forward Courtney Gilmore (Mansfield, MA).

Senior forward Christina Fleury (South Hadley, MA) later upped the lead to 2-0 at the 27:11 mark from Lapolice.

Freshman defender Sarah Steves (North Granville, NY) put the Eagles on the board tipping home a shot by freshman midfielder Natalie Bates (North Kingstown, RI) with 22:40 remaining.

Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) made five saves for Elms College in the victory, while freshman goalkeeper Amy Prince (Hope Valley, RI) made six saves for Daniel Webster.

The Eagles completed their first ever varsity season with a 5-9 overall record.
