Setting The Scene: Elms College snapped a
seven-game losing streak with a thrilling 4-2 win over Wheelock in
last night's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) game at Leary
Field. In the victory, senior defender Ellen Silva (Palmer,
MA) netted a pair of goals and the Blazers scored three
second half goals to pull away. Silva tallied in the 16th and 36th
minutes to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead. The Wildcats answered with
a goal in the 44th minute before sophomore midfielder
Denise Perks (Blackstone, MA) reclaimed the
Blazers' two-goal
advantage with her team-leading fourth goal of the year in the 57th
minute after collecting a centering pass from senior forward
Sarah Lapolice (West Springfield, MA) and
hammering a shot just inside the far post. Although the Wildcats
pulled to within 3-2 in the 65th minute, junior forward
Danielle Boyer (South Hadley, MA) provided the
Blazers an insurance tally with 1:59 remaining for the 4-2 final.
Scouting The Opposition: Bay Path has begun its first intercollegiate season with three straight losses heading into this afternoon's first-ever meeting with Elms College. The Wildcats have lost twice to Daniel Webster (7-0 and 3-0) and 5-0 to Wheelock. Sophomore goalkeeper Kim Amirault (Saugus, MA) stopped a combined 22 shots in the Wildcats' first two losses of the season.
NECC Numbers: Perks began the week tied for third in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) in both goals (3) and points (6).
Balancing Act: Boyer, sophomore midfielder Courtney Gilmore (Mansfield, MA), junior midfielder Kaitlyn Graham (Paxton, MA) and junior defender Danielle Gero (Holyoke, MA) have each netted a goal in the Blazers' first nine games.
Between The Pipes: Senior goalkeeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) leapfrogged her way into the team's top 10 all-time saves leader after stopping a whopping 161 shots a year ago.
