Field Hockey Outlasts Becker College In Penalty Strokes, 1-0
CHICOPEE, MA, Oct. 4, 2007 - Elms
College junior defender Ellen Silva (Palmer, MA)
went three for three in strokes, including the game winner, to
propel the Blazers to their first North Atlantic Conference victory
of the season in Thursday afternoon's field hockey game at Leary
Field.
Elms College junior goalie Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) turned away 11 shots to lead the Blazers to a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation.
Regulation time was full of scoring opportunities on both sides. Becker out-shot the Blazers 10-9 at the end of regulation.
With fourteen minutes left in the first half, Silva had a clear shot from the top of the circle off of a corner that was saved by Becker's junior goalie Ciara Lawarence (Costa Mesa, CA).
Becker College freshman forward Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, PA) had two scoring opportunities at the end of the first half from the top of the circle that were both saved by Wasgatt.
Junior forward Sarah Lapolice (West Springfield, MA) had the Blazers best scoring opportunity in the second fifteen minute overtime with a breakaway that ended in a kick save by Lawarence.
The first set of strokes ended in a 2-2 tie after Elms senior midfielder Catherine Thresher (West Suffield, CT) netted a goal in the far side to keep the Blazers alive.
The second set of strokes also ended in a 2-2 tie and was highlighted by spectacular saves by Wasgatt and Lawarence.
Silva's third straight stroke hit the top left side of the goal and ended up being the game winner.
Elms College continues conference play when they travel to the UMaine-Farmington on Saturday, October 6th at 3:30 pm.
