NORTHAMPTON, MA, Sept. 19, 2007 - Elms College freshman forward Denise Perks (Blackstone, MA) netted her team-leading third goal of the year, but Smith College received a pair of tallies from sophomore forward Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) to help lift the host Pioneers to a 3-1 win over the Blazers in Wednesday night's non-conference field hockey game at Northampton.

Smith won its first game of the year to improve to 1-4. Elms College lost its third straight and fell to 1-6.

The game remained scoreless until senior defender Kim Wronski (Sturbridge, MA) and Goodhue struck for goals in the opening eight minutes of the second half to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.

Perks answered for the Blazers with 8:41 remaining to cut the deficit in half, but Goodhue sealed Smith's victory with her second goal of the night with seven seconds remaining.

Elms College junior goalkeeper Katelyn Wasgatt (Worcester, MA) stopped five shots in the loss.

The Blazers open up North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play when they host Thomas College on Saturday, September 22. The Homecoming Day game is slated for an 11:00 a.m. start at Leary Field.
