BASEBALL FALLS AT FITCHBURG STATE, 7-0

FITCHBURG, MA, April 16, 2009 - Fitchburg State senior designated hitter Kris Breen (Griswold, CT) went 3 for 3, freshman center fielder Michal Mercier (Townsend, MA) delivered a clutch two-run single in the fifth and freshman pitcher Perry Russo (East Hartford, CT) fired a complete-game, four-hit shutout to help the Falcons soar to a 7-0 shutout win over Elms College in Thursday's non-conference baseball game at Riccards Field.

Fitchburg State snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 14-12, while Elms College lost for the third time in four outings and fell to 10-13.

The Falcons plated single runs in each of the first three innings, as sophomore shortstop John Phelan (Walpole, MA) scored on a passed ball in the first, senior right fielder Andy Sauer (Willington, CT) delivered a RBI sacrifice fly in the second and Mercier drew a bases-loaded RBI walk in the third.

Fitchburg State then opened the floodgates and put the game away with a four-run, fifth inning, that included Mercier's two-run single to right, Breen's RBI sac fly and a RBI single by sophomore first baseman Chris Smart (Lowell, MA).

Sophomore catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, MA), junior designated hitter Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL), sophomore first baseman Albert Betances (Haverhill, MA) and freshman center fielder Felix Montalvo (Carolina, Puerto Rico) each had a single for the Blazers in the loss.

Elms College returns to New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) play when it hosts Newbury in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at MacKenzie Stadium. Game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
