BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE
AT RUSSMATT CENTRAL FLORIDA INVITATIONAL

Box scores

WINTER HAVEN, FL, March 9, 2009 - Elms College freshman shortstop Jonathan Ortiz (Carolina, Puerto Rico) went a combined 3 for 6 with three RBI and sophomore pitcher Matt Wood (Feeding Hills, MA) allowed just one earned run in 6.2 innings, but the Blazers fell 17-4 and 1-0 to Rhode Island College in Monday's non-conference baseball doubleheader at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

In game one, Ortiz drove in three of the Blazers' four runs, including a two-run double that tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third.

In the bottom of the third, however, the Anchormen capitalized on a two-out error to plate six unearned runs to make a tough-luck loser out of Elms College freshman pitcher Zach LeBarron (Bennington, VT), who yielded just two earned runs in 3.2 innings.

In the nightcap, Wood was marvelous, as he just one run on two hits, struck out five and walked four, but Rhode Island College freshman Cory Madore (Carver, MA) and junior Bobby Venditto (Cranston, RI) combined to throw a three-hit shutout, as the two combined for 10 strikeouts. The Anchormen (5-0) also converted three double plays in the second game.

The Blazers (0-5) return to action at the RussMatt Invitational to face Emerson in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 11. Game one of the twinbill is 1:00 p.m.
