Baseball Swept By Wentworth At RussMatt Invitational
BASEBALL SWEPT BY WENTWORTH
IN SECOND DAY OF
RUSSMATT CENTRAL FLORIDA INVITATIONAL
AUBURNDALE, FL, March 8, 2009 - Freshman third baseman Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden, MA) went a combined 3 for 6 for Elms College, but the Blazers were swept by Wentworth, 7-2 and 4-0 in a non-conference doubleheader during the second day of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
Elms College (0-3) would get the only runs it would score all day in the home half of the first inning when the first three batters would reach by a hit batsman, a walk, and an infield single. After a strikeout, junior designated hitter Justin Jacobs (Springhill, FL) drew a walk to plate freshman left fielder Felix Montalvo (Carolina, Puerto Rico).
Wentworth sophomore pitcher Matt Jordan (Concord,
NH) got his second strikeout of the inning, but would walk
in his second run of the inning when senior right fielder
Nick Mackowiak (Dudley, MA) drew a bases-load
walk. Jordan would get out of trouble with his third strikeout of
the inning.
The Leopards tied the game in the top of the second inning, as
sophomore Ben Danker (Branford, CT) hit a one-out
single and moved to third on a single from junior Doug
Papuga (Branford, CT). When Papuga stole second, Danker
scored on an errant throw. After a strikeout, freshman
Conner Flisnik (Marcy, NY) singled in his first
collegiate at bat to score Papuga.
Danker would come up with a two-run double in the third inning that
would score senior Mike Roberts (Chelmsford, MA)
and junior Anthony Carbone (Goshen, CT) to give
the Leopards the lead for good. The Leopards would add single runs
in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to account for the final
score.
Jordan picked up the win for Wentworth, as he pitched six innings,
allowing two runs on four hits and struck out nine batters.
Offensively, Danker was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI, while Roberts,
senior Phil Costello (Medford, MA), and Flisnik
each had a pair of hits. Junior Matt Vezina (Uxbridge, MA) pitched
a scoreless seventh inning.
Junior pitcher Dan Ingraham (Granby, MA) suffered
the tough-luck loss for the Blazers, as he allowed four runs (just
two earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out seven.
Iavicoli had two hits in the loss.
Game two saw a masterful pitching performance by Wentworth junior
Chris Sandini (Upton, MA), as he struck out a
career-high 13 batters in a five-hit shutout. The Leopards got all
the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning when
Danker would deliver a two-run single.
Wentworth would add a run in the fourth inning when Jordan, who
pinch-ran for Costello, scored on an errant throw. The Leopards
added their fourth run in the fifth inning when Roberts, who had
led off with a triple to center, scored after the Blazers converted
a double play.
Danker led the leopard offense with two more hits and a pair of RBI
to finish the day 5-for-7 with three RBI, while Roberts, Carbone,
Papuga, and Flisnik each had hits.
Elms College is back in action on Monday afternoon in the third day
of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational when it faces Rhode
Island College in a doubleheader. Game one is set for 1:30 p.m.
