Baseball Splits NAC Doubleheader At Becker

WORCESTER, MA, April 23, 2008 - Elms College sophomore pitcher Mike Bieber (Wading River, NY) twirled a sparkling two-hit shutout through 5.0 innings of game two to help the Blazers earn a split of a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) baseball doubleheader at Becker College on Wednesday evening.

Becker posted a 16-8 win in game one, but Elms College rebounded in convincing fashion with a 20-4 victory in the nightcap.

With the split, the Blazers won for the fourth time in five games to improve to 11-15 overall and now sits in second in the current NAC standings at 5-1 heading into the final weekend of regular season conference play.

Elms College will host first place Castleton (7-1) and third place Thomas (4-2) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

After allowing 14 hits and committing four errors in game one's loss to the host Hawks (6-19, 1-9 NAC), the Blazers rebounded with their second 20-plus run game in five outings.

In the game two's victory over Becker, Elms College plated a pair of runs in the first, five in the third, then blew the game open with 13 runs over the next three innings, highlighted by junior outfielder Nick Mackowiak's (Dudley, MA) first home run of the year - a two-run shot in the fifth.

Bieber finished with six strikeouts and issued just one walk to run his record to 4-1 on the year.

Freshman shortstop Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, MA) went a sizzling 6 for 7 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a triple and five RBI in the two games.

Junior third baseman Mike Andrews (Greenfield, MA) and freshman second baseman Mike Bedson (Moriches, NY) each went a combined 3 for 5 in the two games.
