Swim Teams Fundraise For Cancer Research

SWIMMING TEAMS PARTICIPATE IN HOUR OF POWER

Elms College's men and women's swimming teams recently participated in the Ted Mullin Hour of Power Relay to benefit cancer research.

The event, sponsored by Carleton College, took place on Thursday, November 6 from 5:45 p.m. - 6:46 p.m. and involved over 61 colleges from at least 25 conferences across the country.

Participants were asked to gather donations that will go to the Ted Mullin Fund for Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago where Mullin underwent treatment. Since 2006, the Hour of Power has raised over $54,000.

Coach Bill Tyler was excited his teams could participate in the event for the first time.

"This is something new and different," he explained. "It is a break in our regular training routine and is helping a worthy cause."

Coach Tyler said he hopes that his team realizes that this is about something bigger than just them, and noted how the Hour of Power Relay involved hundreds of swimmers from around the country.

Junior Jason DiMauro (New Hartford, CT) and sophomore Joe King (Springfield, MA) both explained how glad they were to participate in such a meaningful event.

"This (cancer) is something that touches the lives of so many of us," DiMauro noted.

King added "Cancer is serious and we have all got to step up and do what we can to help those in need."

And with plenty of support from friends, coaches, staff and faculty in attendance that is just what they did.

Elms College hopes to continue its participation in the Hour of Power in the future and make it an annual event.
