Goodwin Nabs NECC Honor After 5-Point Week

MARSHFIELD, Mass. -- After scoring two critical goals in an overtime win over Fitchburg State and assisting another in the New England Collegiate Conference opener, Elms College freshman Sydney Goodwin (Lawrence, Mass.) was selected as the NECC Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Goodwin’s first career collegiate goal couldn’t have come at a better time as she scored the equalizer in the 70th minute against Fitchburg State on Sept. 12. Once the game went to overtime, Goodwin wasted little time netting her second goal of the game, a 92nd-minute golden goal that propelled the Blazers to victory.

Goodwin followed that performance with an assist on Elms insurance goal in the 63rd minute in the conference-opener at Dean. She was aggressive throughout the game, firing a game-high seven shots, including four shots on-goal as the Blazers went 2-0 on the week.

Elms returns to action this week at Western New England (Sept. 19) before hosting NECC-rival Lesley on Sept. 22.
