FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Elms College baseball team opened their trip at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a pair of victories of Illinois College at Terry Park Saturday afternoon. The Blazers improve to 2-1 on the season, while Illinois College drops to 0-2 overall.
Game 1: Elms 2, Illinois 1 (Final)
In game one, the Blazers broke the scoreless tie in the second inning as juniors Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) and Tim Gelzinis (N. Dighton, Mass.) knocked singles, followed by a walk to senior Nolan Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) to load the bases. Zima scampered home on a wild pitch to give Elms a 1-0 lead.
Elms senior Tom Weldon (Springfield, Mass.) held the Blueboys hitless for four innings until Illinois College sophomore Drew Law (Litchfield, Ill.) ripped an RBI single to score classmate Connor Melton (Bethalto, Ill.) and even the score at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Zima advanced to second on a single from junior Stephen Harrison (Southbury, Conn.), and then scored on a fielding error by Illinois College to put the Blazers up 2-1. The Blueboys moved Melton to third base after a leadoff single in the seventh, but Weldon struck out Law to register the 2-1 victory.
Weldon (1-0) registered his first complete game of the season, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts. Weldon moves into a tie as Elms' all-time leader in complete game with 11 career complete games. His seven innings pitched made him Elms' all-time leader in innings pitched (182.2). Gelzinis led the Blazers offense with two hits.
Illinois College senior D.J. Davis (0-1; Penfield, Ill.) took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, on four hits with a game-high nine strikeouts.
Game 2: Elms 4, Illinois College 1 (Final)
In the top of the third, the Blazers cracked the scoreboard with two outs as freshman Alex Hoss (Stafford Springs, Conn.) singled and then scored on an RBI double from freshman Tim Donahue (Westfield, Mass.). Zima tacked on a pair of runs with a two-run single, scoring junior Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) and Donahue, to put the Blazers up 3-0.
The Blueboys chipped into the Elms advantage in the bottom of the third, opening the frame on back-to-back singles from junior Anthony Lucchesi (Pleasant Plains, Ill.) and senior Austin Dormire (Clayton, Ill.). After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Lucchesi scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-1 game.
After three scoreless innings, the Blazers added an insurance run as Medeiros singled, advanced to third on a single from senior R.J. Lyrenmann (Glendale, Ariz.), and then scored on a field error by Illinois College, to regain a 4-1 advantage for Elms.
Elms senior Andrew Sadowski (1-1; Northampton, Mass.) recorded his first victory of the season, giving up one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts. Senior Brian Langdon (Beacon Falls, Conn.) notched his first save of the season with a perfect inning of work, becoming Elms' all-time leader in career saves.
The Blazers will be back on the diamond with a doubleheader against Hiram College Sunday afternoon at the Terry Park Complex. First pitch of game one is slated for 3:00 p.m. Illinois College battles Lakeland College in a doubleheader Sunday at 9:00 a.m.
