WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Elms College baseball team was limited to just three hits as Westfield State College posted a 5-0 victory over the Blazers in a non-conference contest at Alumni Field in Westfield on Sunday.

With the loss, Elms falls to 4-8 on the season, while Westfield State improves to 11-3 overall.

Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Westfield crossed the plate twice when Jeff Fields (Pittsfield, Mass.) blooped an RBI single down the right field line before Matt Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.) followed with a run-scoring double to right field to give the Owls a 3-0 lead.

Westfield tacked on two more in the bottom of the seventh when Andrew Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) smashed an RBI single and Fields lifted a sacrifice fly.

Westfield starting pitcher Bob Sinopoli (Wilmington, Mass.) threw the opening six innings and earned the win. He allowed two hits and two walks and fanned two, while Matt McDougall (Milton, Mass.) threw two innings of scoreless relief and gave up just one hit. Fields closed out the ninth inning to seal the victory.

Kelly finished 3 for 5 with an RBI, while Medeiros registered two hits in the game.

Elms sophomore southpaw Zach LeBarron (Bennington, Vt.) pitched the first six innings of the game and suffered his first loss of the season to move to 1-1. LeBarron struck out four batters in the losing effort.

Freshman center fielder Stephen Fisher (West Boylston, Mass.), sophomore third baseman Andrew Kravontka (Manchester, Conn.) and junior catcher Carm Bonavita (Springfield, Mass.) tallied the Blazers’ only hits in the game.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Wednesday, March 31 for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Springfield College.
