CHICOPEE, MA, Sept. 16, 2008 - Westfield State freshman Dan Korpita (Southampton, MA) tied for individual medalist honors with a round of 6-over par 77 and the Owls earned team medalist honors in the four-team Blazers Invitational men's golf tournament hosted by Elms College at Chicopee Country Club.

Westfield State, which played its first intercollegiate match since the program was suspended following the fall 1988 season, had all four of its scoring golfers place in the top six overall for a team score of 314. The Owls easily outdistanced Elms College (343), Mitchell (358) and Newbury (381).

Elms College junior Ben Kwiatkowski (Chicopee, MA), who also carded a 77, earned a one-hole playoff victory over Korpita following a par on the par-4 first hole.

Kwiatkowski hammered a 270-yard drive down the middle of the fairway, while Korpita's tee shot went out of bounds on the right side. Kwiatkowski then placed his second shot on the green 30 feet from the hole before two-putting for the victory.

For the round, Kwiatkowski played both the par 3's and par 5's in even-par.

Junior Chris McCarthy (Westfield, MA) and freshman Nate Luippold (Greenfield, MA) were each one shot back with rounds of 7-over par 78 and sophomore Brett Williamson (Ludlow, MA) followed with a solid round of 81 to help seal the Owls' historic victory.

As a team, Westfield State shot 1-over par on Chicopee Country Club's par 5's.

Mitchell's Matt Burke tied for third overall with his round of 78 that included a 1-over 36 in the back nine.
