Blazers Fall To Springfield In NCAA Tournament Debut, 24-3

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Elms College women's lacrosse team lost in its NCAA Tournament debut on Saturday, falling 24-3 to Springfield College at Trinity College (CT).

Vanessa Vurno (East Lyme, Conn.) scored two first-half goals for the Blazers, who earned the program's first postseason berth after winning the New England Collegiate Conference tournament last week. Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.) added a goal on a free position shot in the second half.

Springfield took control of the game from the start. The Pride scored the first 11 goals of the contest and never trailed. Vurno scored twice in the final 10 minutes of the first half as Elms went into the break trailing 13-2. The Pride continued to add to their lead throughout the second half.

Kate Sarnacki (Granby, Mass.) led Springfield with five goals and two assists.

Springfield held a 40-11 advantage in total shots and led 22-6 in draw controls in the game. Blazer Goalkeeper Emily Huber (Jefferson, Maine) came up with eight saves.

The Blazers finish the season with a 10-9 overall record. Springfield advances to face Trinity in the second round on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
