Vurno's 100th Goal Helps Propel Blazers To Third Win In Four Games

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Elms College women's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in New England Collegiate Conference play with a 25-8 win over rival Bay Path at Leary Field on Saturday.

Vanessa Vurno led the Blazer (3-7, 2-0 NECC) offensive charge with six goals, including the 100th of her career, to go along with four assists. Haley Richard added a game-high eight goals and added two assists for Elms. Erienne Dowe and Alecia Keesee each added three goals for Elms. Blazer goalkeeper Emily Huber finished with four saves in the win.

Kaylee Herring scored five of the eight Bay Path (0-4, 0-1 NECC) goals and Samantha Rubacha added two for the Wildcats. Kristina Tran turned away 19 Elms shots but was bombarded with 44 shots on goal in the game.

The Blazers led in nearly every statistical category, finishing with advantages in shots (50-15), draw controls (20-15), turnovers (23-14), and ground balls (17-7).

Elms jumped out to a 5-1 lead early but the Wildcats kept the game close and were within three at 9-6 late in the first half. Elms then added three more scores before halftime and used a 4-1 run to open the second half to build a 16-7 10 with 20 minutes to play before cruising to victory.

The Blazers have won three of their last four games and will look to continue the momentum when they close their current three-game home-stand against Nichols on April 12 at 7:00 p.m.
