NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Elms College freshman Jesse Zina (Ludlow, Mass.) and junior Jennifer Cicero (Chicopee, Mass.) were the top individual finishers for the Blazers at Saturday's 12-team season-opening Smith College Cross Country Invitational in Northampton, Mass.
Elms' men's squad finished ninth out of nine teams, while the women's team placed 11th out of 12 teams.
Host Smith College placed three runners in the top 10 to capture the victory on the women's side, while the United States Coast Guard Academy, Lesley University, Delaware Valley College and Mount Holyoke College rounded out the top five.
Delaware Valley's Caitlin Dorgan (Red Bank, N.J.) took home top individual honors, completing the five-kilometer course in 19:05.
On the men's side, the US Coast Guard Academy took top spot, led by four finishers in the top five. Springfield College, Western New England College, Lesley University, and Clark University rounded out the top five for the men.
US Coast Guard Academy's Nate Crum (Bellevue, Wash.) won the men's five-kilometer race, crossing the line in 16:41.
For the Blazers' women's team, Cicero completed the course in 28:48, followed by junior Chantal Wakefield (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who registered a time of 29:04. Freshman Gabrielle Calvanese (Agawam, Mass.) notched a time of 29:54 to round out Elms' top three finishers.
On the men's side, Zina recorded a time of 21:14, while freshman Patrick Noenickx (Scituate, Mass.) earned a mark of 21:49. Sophomore Brendan Warren (Arlington, Mass.) crossed the tape in 24:16 as Elms third best finisher.
