Men’s and Women’s Swimming Fall at Regis College

WESTON, Mass. – The Elms College men's and women's swim teams each suffered close losses at the hands of Regis College on Saturday afternoon in Weston, Mass. 

The men's team moved to 6-2 on the season following a 123-114 loss, while the women's squad lost 144-108 and now stands at 2-9 on the season. 

On the men's side, junior Keegan Goan (Westbrook, Maine) won a pair of events, claiming first in the 100-yard butterfly (55.48) and the 50-yard butterfly (24.62). Goan also tabbed second place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:13.39. 

The Blazers also had a trio of freshmen notch first and second place finishes including James Grippo (Longmeadow, Mass.)Ethan Etheridge (Pawtucket, R.I.), and Kyle Murphy (Holyoke, Mass.)

Grippo was first in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:36.61) and second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.11); Etheridge was first in the 100-yard freestyle (52.24) and second in the 50-yard freestyle (23.57); and Murphy clocked a top time of 5:22.30 in the 500-yard freestyle and second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.06). 

Senior Mark Gehring (West Springfield, Mass.) touched the wall second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.19) and third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.56), while the team of Gehring, junior Aaron Starke (Chicopee, Mass.), Etheridge and Goan won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:36.83. 

For the women, senior Tricia Ruell (Chicopee, Mass.) and junior Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) each won a pair of events. 

Ruell was first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:12.02) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:37.53) and DeGrazia glided to top finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (57.77) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.33). DeGrazia also swam to a second place mark in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.85. 

Seniors Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) each clocked a first and second place finish. Dudunake was first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.33) and second in the 100-yard freestyle (26.83), while Furtek was first in the 50-yard butterfly (29.67) and powered to second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:42.58) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:12.69).

Juniors Emily Schneider (West Kingston, R.I.) and Kelly Gilhooly (Bloomfield, Conn.)added second place times in the 1000-yard freestyle (13:15.87) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:13.49) respectively.

Elms will host the University of New England on Saturday, Feb. 2 in its final dual meet of the 2012-13 season at 12:00 p.m. at Partyka Natatorium.
