Blazers Split With Pride on Senior Day

CHICOPEE, MA - The Elms College Blazers Softball team split the twin bill on their Senior day against the Regis College Pride Saturday, April 22nd on the brand new Cheryl R. Condon Field.

BASICS

Score: Pride 2 | Blazers 3

Records: Pride (11-19, 2-4) | Blazers (2-22, 1-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jayden Dow (Springfield, MA) was in the circle for the Blazers as they went up against the Regis College Pride. Dow threw for four innings, the junior let up only 7 hits and 2 runs in the seven inning game. 

Elms College opened up with a three run first inning. It all started with back to back walks for Courtney Schwark (Port Ewen, NY) and Nicole Defeo (Watertown, CT). Schwark was able to capitalize off of the wild pitch that sent Defeo to first, by advancing to third. With smart base running by the Blazers, Schwark and Defeo sitting at third and second. Kelsey Bennet was able to crack the ball to the gap between the Prides shortstop and left fielder, sending home the first run of the game and recording the only hit of the game for the Blazers. Due to another passed ball the Defeo safely slid home and Bennet advanced to third, recording the second run of the inning. Junior Josie Cammaratta (Wolcott, CT) grounded out to the second baseman to send home Bennett to record the third run, building a 3-0 lead over the Pride.

The Pride wouldn't chalk up a run til the top of the fifth inning when A. Braga would fly out to left field for a sacrifice fly to send home B. Burke. The Regis nine would add another run in the top of the 7th inning due to an error by the left fielder allowing L. Nichols to score. 

The Blazers would remain at three runs for the continuation of game one.

Elms College would secure the 3-2 victory over the Regis College Pride for game one in the two game series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The game remained a pair of goose eggs for the majority of the second game. 

It wasn't until the fifth inning when K. Morill from Regis was able to score off of a wild pitch, advancing S. Monahan to third. The Blazers were able to close out the inning after L. Nichols flew out to right field off of the next pitch.

Prides' A. Braga executed a sacrifice bunt to advance B. Burke to third to set the runner in an optimal scoring position.  D. Petrarca followed up by singling through the right side for an RBI in the top of the sixth. 

In the same inning M. Zancan would hit a grand slam to jump the Pride to a 5 run inning, for a 6-0 run lead over the Blazers.  

The Blazers would fall in game two, 6-0 for the final score.

 

UP NEXT

The Blazers are back on the newly turfed Cheryl R. Condon Field on Tuesday, April 25 for a non conference doubleheader at 3PM and 5PM against the Fisher College Falcons.
