Women's Lacrosse Blanks Newbury

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Elms College women's lacrosse shut out host Newbury College, 20-0, during a New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) game at Hormel Stadium Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Blazers improve to 8-2, and 6-1 in the NECC, while Newbury drops to 0-4 in conference play and 0-9 on the season.

The Blazers raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening ten minutes of action as junior Alissa Porfilio (Agawam, Mass.) wrapped a pair of goals around a strike from freshman Haley Richard (Monson, Mass.). Following a tally from freshman Alecia Keesee (Westfield, Mass.), Richard potted her second of the day at the 16:27 mark to expand the gap to 5-0. With 16:07 left in the first half, Elms netted three goals in less than a minute of action, featuring a goal and an assist from senior Kathleen Tuechler (Farmingdale, N.Y.) to swell the lead to 8-0. Richard recorded a hat trick at the 15:01 mark, followed by a three-goal spurt from sophomore Vanessa Vurno (Salem, Conn.) as the Blazers held a 14-0 lead at the half.

After junior Madison Jung (Stafford Springs, Conn.) opened the second half scoring for Elms, senior Meeghan O'Connor (Fall River, Mass.) netted her first career goal on a free-position attempt at the 18:17 mark. Elms senior Sabrina Pereira (South Windsor, Conn.) found the back of the net less than two minutes later, and then freshman Kelly Scianna (Milford, Conn.) recorded her first collegiate goal to hand the Blazers an 18-0 lead with 14:20 to play. Junior Lindsey McNiff (Kingston, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season, followed by a tally from junior Arianna Santiago-Sullivan (Willimantic, Conn.) as the Blazers rolled to the 20-0 victory.

The Blazers posted a season-high 51 shots in the win, and won the draw control battle, 17-5. O'Connor stopped two shots in the first half, while freshman Kaila Abrams (Westfield, Mass.) relieved O'Connor with a clean second half. Newbury freshman Keeley Molloy (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a season-high 25 saves in the loss.

The Blazers will be back in action when they host Wentworth Thursday night at Leary Field at 7:00 p.m. Newbury travels to Wheelock for an NECC contest Tuesday at Winsor Field.
