Salem State University Bests Women’s Lacrosse, 17-6

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore attacker Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass.) scored a team-high three goals but Salem State University's Kate Warren (Sandwich, Mass.) tallied a team-high four scores to pace the Vikings who had eight players find the back of the net in a 17-6 New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) contest on Tuesday evening at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms falls to 0-8 overall, 0-3 in NEWLA action, while Salem State improves to 4-1 overall, 2-0 in NEWLA play.

Salem State used a balanced attack in both periods, scoring nine goals in the opening 30 minutes and eight in the second half. Warren notched two of her goals in a span of 29 seconds before Narey put Elms on the board with her first scoring strike of the contest.

The Vikings responded with six unanswered goals as Warren netted her third goal of the game, while Kelsey Russell (Arlington, Mass.), Bridget Dullea (Peabody, Mass.), Catherine O'Neill (Hamilton, Mass.), Kristen Cahoon (Reading, Mass.)and Liz Kosak (Milton, Mass.) each scored a goal to give Salem State an 8-1 lead.

Blazers' junior attacker Kaitlyn Harrington (East Longmeadow, Mass.) halted the run with her first marker of the contest before the Vikings' Kristen Caso (Framingham, Mass.) and Elms' freshman attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) traded scores to close out the period with Salem State ahead, 9-3.

A Kosak goal and two by Dullea lifted the advantage to 12-3 four minutes into the second frame before Mazza scored on free position shot to cut the lead to 12-4.

The Vikings then closed out the game on a 5-2 run as Russell and Susan Reis (Burlington, Mass.) each scored twice, while Warren found the back of the net for the fourth time for Salem State.

Narey netted the Blazers' final two goals of the game including a free position goal with 2:20 to play to cap the scoring at 17-6.

Elms' senior goalkeeper Rachel Schrutt (Chicopee, Mass.) turned away 19 shots and recorded a team-high 10 groundballs, while Narey scooped five groundballs and collected three draw controls.

Salem State received an eight-save effort from net-minder Molly Blewett (Gloucester, Mass.), while O'Neill, Russell and Dullea picked up four groundballs apiece.

Elms returns to NEWLA action on Thursday, April 5 at Westfield State University at 4:00 p.m.
