Men's Basketball Sweeps NECC Weekly Awards

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College senior Symon Smith (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and freshman DeAngelo Cousar (Bowie, Md.) were selected to receive New England Collegiate Conference weekly honors, announced by the league office Monday. Smith takes home his first NECC Player of the Week award, while Cousar picks up his first collegiate honor with NECC Rookie of the Week acclaim.

Smith averaged 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.7 assists during the Blazer first three games of the season. Smith opened the season with 20 points and four rebounds against Gordon, and then netted a career-high 30 points with seven rebounds and a career-high five steals versus host Plattsburgh State. During a battle with RPI, Smith tallied 26 points and six rebounds in a 77-71 loss. Smith was selected to the Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team for his efforts against Plattsburgh State and RPI.

Cousar began his Blazers career delivering double figures in points during all three of the Blazers games to open the season, averaging 13 points and six rebounds. In his collegiate debut at Gordon, Cousar tallied 13 points and five rebounds, followed by a 12-point effort against Plattsburgh State. Cousar logged his first career double-double after scoring a career-high 14 points and grabbing a career-high 10 rebounds against RPI.

The Blazers will be back on the court with their 2016-17 home opener against Trinity (Conn.) at Picknelly Arena Tuesday at 8:00 p.m.
