Elms Baseball Falls To Union In Non-Conference Play

HOLYOKE, Mass. – The Elms College baseball team collected 10 hits but stranded 13 base-runners in a 7-4 loss to Union (N.Y.) in non-conference action at Mackenzie Stadium on Tuesday night.

Four Blazers – Alex Hoss, Thomas Slane, Kevin Banas and Nathan Ayala – had two-hit performances and Hoss, Slane and Ben Ross each drove in a run for Elms (4-17).

Elms fell behind 3-0 in the first inning after Union picked up four hits, including a couple weak infield singles. The Blazers got one run back in the second but the Dutchmen scored once in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth, and Elms wasn't able to keep pace.

The Blazers scored twice in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth after Banas was hit by a pitch and Ayala walked, but they were unable to advance any farther.

Banas got the start on the bump for the Blazers, and struck out six batters without allowing a walk in five innings of work. He gave up four runs, all earned, in the loss. Union (13-4) starter Anthony DeSantis worked 4.2 innings and struck out six Elms batters while yielding two runs, one earned. He gave way to Josh Garber, who threw 2.1 innings of one-hit ball and got the win.

The Dutchmen offense tallied a dozen hits in the game. Will Bellamy went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Harrison Glatt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the way.

Elms will return to Mackenzie Stadium for another non-conference showdown on Wednesday when Amherst visits for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
