Baseball Plays to Double Header Split With Daniel Webster College

NASHUA, N.H. – The Elms College baseball team played to a double header split with Daniel Webster College on Monday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. The Blazers won the first game, 5-2 before the Eagles responded with a 4-2 victory in game two.

With the split, Elms improves to 10-17 overall, 6-9 in league action, while Daniel Webster moves to 12-19 on the season, 7-11 in NECC action.

Game One: Elms 5, Daniel Webster 2

After both teams exchanged runs in the first inning, Daniel Webster pushed the go-ahead run across in the bottom of the fifth inning when Manny Cabral (Tewksbury, Mass.) delivered an RBI single to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Blazers rallied in the top of the sixth frame when senior catcher Zach Dreher (Naugatuck, Conn.) doubled to lead off the frame before junior third baseman Geoff Frost (Ludlow, Mass.) singled him in. Following a base hit by freshman first baseman Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.), senior right fielder Alex King (Lebanon, Conn.) added an RBI single to give Elms a 3-2 lead. Freshman left fielder Tim Gelzinis (North Dighton, Mass.) loaded the bases with the Blazers' fifth hit of the stanza before junior center fielder Brady Forrest (Hampden, Mass.) drew an RBI walk to give Elms a 4-2 advantage.

After freshman starting pitcher Cody Lemieux (Torrington, Conn.) retired Daniel Webster in order in the bottom of the sixth, the Blazers added its final tally in the top of the seventh when Dreher scored on a passed ball to set the final score at 5-2.

Lemieux improved to 1-2 following his seven-inning, complete game. He allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two batters.

Dreher was 2 for 3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Zima was 3 for 3 with a run scored. Cabral was 2 for 3 for the Eagles in the losing effort while Derek Dolan (Lowell, Mass.) suffered the loss on the hill.

Game Two: Daniel Webster 4, Elms 2

In game two, Elms took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Gelzinis reached on a bases loaded fielder's choice driving in Frost from third and allowing Zima to score from second following an infield error on the play.

Daniel Webster answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth frame when Kyle Brigham (Hudson, N.H.) scored on a passed ball, before an RBI groundout off the bat of Dan Quinn (Auburn, N.H.) evened the game at 2-2.

The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the six when Devin DeCarterat (Pelham, N.H.) doubled and then scored on a triple by Brigham who also came home following an Elms miscue to give Daniel Webster a 4-2 edge.

Eagles' starting pitcher Curtis Hamilton (Lowell, Mass.) tossed six frames (five scoreless) and allowed just two runs (one earned) on one hit while striking out three to seal the win. Ariel Ramos (Lowell, Mass.) earned the save after hurling a scoreless seventh inning with a strikeout.

Elms' junior starter Sean Sinnott (Granby, Conn.) suffered the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out two batters.

Brigham led Daniel Webster's offense with three of the team's eight hits.

Elms returns to NECC action on Tuesday, April 29 when it hosts Southern Vermont College in double header action beginning at 5:30 p.m. at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke, Mass.
