Smith College Outlasts Women’s Swimming, 141-121

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman swimmer Devon DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) clocked three school records and notched a pair of first place finishes, but Smith College's Emma Reim (Ledyard, Conn.) claimed three top finishes to help pace the Pioneers to a hard-fought 141-121 victory over the Blazers in Tuesday evening's women's swimming dual meet at Partyka Natatorium.

With the loss, Elms moves to 2-1 on the season while Smith improves to 1-1 overall.

DeGrazia earned first place honors in the 100-meter backstroke (1:12.28) and the 100-meter freestyle (1:02.62) shattering school records in the process. She also swam to a second place finish in the 100-meter butterfly in a new school record time of 1:14.33 just 26 hundredths of a second behind Smith's Mackenzie Bradley (Sherwood, Ore.) who registered a 1:14.07 in the race.

Elms also received three first place finishes from freshman Ashley Kirchner (Dalton, Mass.) who set a new school mark of 2:39.13 in the 200-meter individual medley in addition to scoring times of 1:20.54 and 2:58.00 in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events respectively.

Sophomore Tessa Dudunake (Northampton, Mass.) and sophomore Emalee Furtek (Ludlow, Mass.) finished in first and second in the 50-meter freestyle as Dudunake touched the wall first in a school record-setting time of 29.42 while Furtek glided in just behind at 29.82.

Freshman Abby Wingfield (Florence, Mass.) swam to a third place finish and new school record of 3:21.45 in the 200-meter butterfly while junior Ashley Arbo (Kensington, Conn.) clocked the Blazers' seventh individual school record of the evening in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:37.04 to win the event.

Elms' 200-metere medley relay team of Arbo, Kirchner, Furtek and Dudunake won the opening event (2:13.20) while the squad of DeGrazia, Furtek, senior Theresa Pitassi (Naugatuck, Conn.) and Dudunake finished second but registered a new school record in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:26.37.

Reim's three victories came in the 800-meter freestyle (10:10.08), the 200-meter butterfly (2:54.72) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:56.65).

In addition to winning the 100-meter butterfly, Bradley also won the 200-meter freestyle and placed second in the 400-meter freestyle with times of 2:19.84 and 4:57.66 respectively.

The Pioneers concluded the meet with a win in the 400-meter freestyle relay as the team of Robin Currens (Frederick, Md.), Reim, Lauren Kauffman (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Bradley posted a winning time of 4:22.68 to secure Smith's victory in the meet.

Elms returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 20 when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College. The first event is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. at Partyka Natatorium.
