Maritime College (N.Y.) Edges Women’s Lacrosse, 11-7

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Elms College junior attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) netted a team-high three goals and sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Carpenter (Vernon, Conn.) turned away 16 shots but Maritime College (N.Y.) notched a five-goal, 7-2 halftime lead and held on for an 11-7 win in Friday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game in Throggs Neck, N.Y.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-2 overall, while Maritime improves to 1-2 on the season.

In the first half, Leanne Lavelle (New Windsor, N.Y.) netted three of her game-best four goals and Hannah Pell (Southampton, N.Y.), Tina Kang (Valley Stream, N.Y.), Savannah Hardwick (Pawling, N.Y.) and Jane Quinn (Oakdale, N.Y.) each added a marker to give the Privateers a 7-2 cushion after 30 minutes of play.

Trailing 2-0, Elms got on the board when junior attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) found the back of the net for her fourth strike of the season with 21:13 to play. Mazza then netted her first goal at the 18:32 mark to even the game at 2-2. Maritime answered with five straight scores including Quinn's marker with 53 seconds left to help stake the five-goal advantage.

In the second half, Lavelle added her fourth goal just 2:40 into the frame, before Blazers' sophomore attacker Jillian Pirog (Ludlow, Mass.) and senior midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) tallied back-to-back strikes to set the score at 8-4.

From there, the sides exchanged the next six goals to set the final score at 11-7.

Quinn found the back of the net twice more to finish with three goals, while Hardwick added her second goal. 

Quinn added a game-high 10 groundballs and caused five turnovers while goalkeeper Meghin Paczkowski (Oceanside, N.Y.) made 12 saves in the winning effort.

Mazza totaled three goals and Pirog followed with two markers, while Lyons and McDonough finished with one each. Lyons added a game-high 10 groundballs and caused eight turnovers.

Elms returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, March 18 at Wentworth Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m.
