Box Score

NASHUA, N.H. – Elms College senior second baseman Brendan Cordeiro (Berkley, Mass.) was 1 for 4 with a run scored, but Daniel Webster College's Korey LeLievre (Hudson, N.H.) went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and four RBI to help spark the Eagles to a 5-1 win over the Blazers in Sunday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) baseball game at Harvey Woods Field.

With the loss, Elms concludes its season 15-19 overall, 7-11 in NECC action. Daniel Webster improves to 19-13 on the season, 10-8 in league play.

Elms struck first when Brendan Cordeiro singled to start the game, stole second with one down in the frame, and then scored when junior shortstop Nicolino Iavicoli (Hampden, Mass.) reached on an infield error by the Eagles to give the Blazers a 1-0 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, Daniel Webster surged ahead when Chris McKenzie (Burlington, Mass.) walked, advanced to second on a base hit by Darrick Marstaller (Spofford, N.H.), advanced to third on a fielder's choice and then came full circle on an RBI fielder's choice by Tyler Calkin (Hollis, N.H.) to even the game at 1-1. LeLievre then cracked the first of his two-run doubles to extend the Eagles' lead to 3-1 before Elms' sophomore right-handed starting pitcher John Russell (Springfield, Mass.) forced a groundout to get out of the inning.

After the sides played scoreless baseball through the middle innings, Daniel Webster added some insurance in the bottom of the seventh when Josh Chasse (Haverhill, Mass.) singled, Calkin walked and Bruce Brown (Lowell, Mass.) singled to load the bases. LeLievre then smashed his second two-RBI two-bagger to lift the Eagles cushion to 5-1. Elms' junior left-handed reliever Andrew Bunger (Southington, Conn.) entered and induced an inning-ending groundout and then pitched a scoreless eighth frame.

Elms was limited to just three hits in the contest but had scoring opportunities in the seventh and eighth with runners on third in both stanzas but could not deliver the timely hit.

Russell pitched the first 4.2 innings for the Blazers and suffered the loss to fall to 1-1 on the season while his starting counterpart Syed Ali (Dracut, Mass.) tossed six innings and earned the victory to improve to 3-1 overall.

Elms' freshman right-handed middle reliever Derek Leal (Charlton, Mass.) tossed three strikeouts to lead all pitchers.
