Bonavita, Coleman and Goodrow Named NECC Players of the Week

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Elms College had three players garner New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) weekly honors as announced by the league office on Monday.

The Blazers’ field hockey program swept this week’s awards as junior goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) was named NECC Player of the Week, while freshman forward Meghan Goodrow (Sunderland, Mass.) was named rookie of the week.

Bonavita helped pace Elms to a 1-1 week by making 26 saves and allowing just two goals during the week. Bonavita made 12 saves in a 1-0 victory over Smith College, and turned back 14 shots to keep the Blazers in the contest during a 2-0 loss at Colby-Sawyer College. Bonavita is ranked as the program’s second all-time saves leader with 512 career stops.

Goodrow scored the game-winning goal in Elms' first win of the season, a 1-0 win over Smith that snapped a 23-game losing streak dating back to Oct. 10, 2009. The freshman's goal with 10 minutes to go in the contest lifted the Blazers' to their first win over the Pioneers since 2000.

In men’s soccer, freshman forward Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, Mass.) scored two goals including the game-winner in a 5-2 win over Lyndon State College to highlight Elms’ 1-1 week. Coleman, named NECC Rookie of the Week for his efforts, is Elms’ leading scorer through five games this season.
