Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Rhode Island College, 19-4

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College sophomore attacker Lauren Mazza (Agawam, Mass.) scored two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Alysha Parsons (Newington, Conn.)  made 17 saves but Rhode Island College used six scores from Ashley Signoriello (Cranston, R.I.) and four from Jessica Ricci (Hope, R.I.) to help pace the Anchorwomen to a 19-4 victory in Saturday afternoon's non-conference women's lacrosse game at Leary Field.

With the loss, Elms moves to 1-4 on the season, while Rhode Island improves to 1-1 overall.

In the opening period, Rhode Island posted a 3-0 lead in the first 7:48 of play before Mazza scored on a feed from sophomore attacker Nora McDonough (South Hadley, Mass.) to cut the Blazers' deficit to 3-1. However, the Anchorwomen answered with six straight goals, including four from Signoriello to help Rhode Island post a 9-1 lead at intermission.

Mazza scored her second of the contest on a free position shot at the 26:52 mark of the second stanza and following three more scores from the Anchorwomen, McDonough found the back of the net on a free position shot with 13:55 remaining in the game to set the score at 12-3. Rhode Island then outscored Elms, 7-1 to close out the game.

Sophie Kanno (Cranston, R.I.) and Jessalyn O'Neill (North Providence, R.I.) scored three goals for the Anchorwomen, while Signoriello and Lauren Maisano (Bristol, R.I.) added a game-high seven groundball pickups each.

Elms' midfielder Brianna Lyons (Canton, Mass.) scored the team's final goal of the game and led the squad with five groundballs, while senior defenders Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) and Marcia Norat (Brockton, Mass.) caused six and four opponent turnovers respectively.

Anchorwomen goalkeeper Taryn Carbone (Cranston, R.I.) made eight saves in the winning effort.

Elms is back in action Thursday, March 28 when it travels to Fitchburg State University for a 4:00 p.m. non-conference tilt.
