SCHNECTADY, N.Y. – The Elms College baseball team was dealt a 6-2 setback by host Union College in a non-conference game at Shuttlesworth Park Wednesday night. The Blazers dip to 6-13 on the season, while Union improves to 11-6.

After two scoreless innings, freshman Matt Catalfo (Manhasset, N.Y.) put the Dutchmen on the scoreboard in the third after delivering an RBI single to centerfield, and then came around to score as sophomore Anthony Amoroso (Monroe, Conn.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, handing Union a 2-0 lead. The Blazers threatened in the top of the fourth, but Union sophomore Jordan Whaley (Simsbury, Conn.) worked out of a one-out, base-loaded jam to maintain the 2-0 game.

Dutchmen junior Andy Labeck (Valley Stream, N.Y.) clubbed a leadoff home run in bottom half of the inning, and Catalfo picked up his second RBI of the day with an infield single. Union junior Jake Vesling (Doylestown, Pa.) produced Union's third run of the inning, plating Catalfo with a two-out single through the left side to make it 5-0. Junior Sam Kirschenbaum (Hamden, Conn.) extended lead to 6-0 in the sixth with a two-out, bases-loaded single.

In the top of the seventh, Elms senior Aedin Wadja (Lebanon, Conn.) stroked a lead-off double, and then came around to score on a two-out RBI groundout from classmate Jordan Zima (Berlin, Conn.) to put the Blazers on the scoreboard. The Blazers added a final run in the ninth behind an RBI fielder's choice from Zima as Elms fell to the Dutchmen, 6-2.

Elms sophomore Cody Fisher (0-1; South Windsor, Conn.) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore Anthony Palumbo (Bedford, N.Y.) and freshman Jamie Ryan (Easthampton, Mass.) delivered scoreless innings in relief. Union junior starter Nick Williams (Simsbury, Conn.) scattered two hits in four scoreless innings with five strikeouts, while Whaley (2-0) picked up the win in relief.

The Blazers will be back on the diamond Thursday night when they host Mitchell College in a New England Collegiate Conference clash at MacKenzie Stadium at 8:00 p.m. Union travels to Vassar Friday for a Liberty League doubleheader at 2:00 p.m.
