Blazers Fall in Five Set Thriller to the Mariners

NEW LONDON, CT – The Elms College women's volleyball team dropped a five set thriller on the road last night to the Mitchell College Mariners. The Blazers lost on set scores of (25-19, 25-23, 21-25, 22-25 and 11-15).

How It Happened

The Mariners took a slight edge to begin the contest, but Blazers quickly rewrote the script and took the lead in both the first two sets. The Mariners did not sit back and allow Elms to take those two sets easily as they trailed just a point behind for the majority of each set.

The third set was a completely different game as Mitchell compiled a lead early, with a 14-19 gap no one was prepared for the switch of events. The Mariners collected their first match point in the third set.

The fourth set was very similar to the third as Mitchell built a lead right off the toss of the first serve. Alysha Izquierdo ( Holyoke, MA) hammered down six kills in the fourth set alone, providing a boost to the Blazers as they tied up the set at 18's. Mariners cap the set in a 22-25 win, match tied 2-2.

In the deciding set, the Blazers held onto the lead as best they could as the Mariners kept right on their tails for the majority of the set. The Blazers were unable to add another point once they scored their eleventh one of the set and the Mariners took the final five points, closing out the match. Final set score 11-15, Mariners 3-2 in the match.
