Blazers Cap Season in the Quarterfinals

Blazers Cap Season in the Quarterfinals

Providence, RI - The Blazer's came up short yesterday evening as they faced Johnson & Wales University in the GNAC Quarterfinals.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The early portion of the first set saw the Blazers and Wildcats trade points, with neither side able to establish a lead. The Blazers were up 7-5 before a 5-10 run by JWU saw them in a 12-15 deficit. JWU didn't let up and despite a pair of points from Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA) to get Elms within 5 at 17-22, the deficit was too much to overcome for the Blazers. The Blazers fell 18-25 and down 0-1 in the match.

The second set began with traded points as the Blazers trailed by one at 6-5. A strong JWU run saw the Blazers down 7-16 mid-way through the set. The Blazers continued to push and three back-to-back kills from Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.) and Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Boca Raton, FL) and a solo block by Cruz Diaz pushed them to 13-20 and JWU into a timeout. The teams traded points with Elms eventually falling 17-25. The Blazers were down 0-2 in the match.

The Blazers struggled in the beginning of the third set and were down 8-15 mid-way as the Wildcats held their momentum. Elms refused to go quietly and battled back within four after a pair of kills from Christie and Cruz Diaz at 17-21. Elms fell 19-25 in the third and 0-3 in the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Ramos Figueroa led the Blazers with 8 kills and added 9 digs.
  • Cruz Diaz added 7 kills, 4 digs, and three blocks.
  • Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.) led the defense with 14 digs.
