Blazers Sweep Weekend Trimatch

Westfield, MA - Elms College earned two wins on Saturday, 10/6 in a tri-meet match hosted by Westfield State University. The Blazers defeated the Bears 25-17, 28-26 and 25-16 before beating the Owls 25-17, 25-8 and 25-15.

THE BASICS

SCORE: Elms 3 | Bridgewater State 0, Elms 3 | Westfield State 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Elms 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-16)

The first set remained close as the Blazers held a 2-point lead mid-way through the set at 15-13. A service run from Govanna Rosado (Humacao, P.R.) gave the Blazers a 22-14 lead. A pair of kills from Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.) closed out the set 25-17. 

The second set began in similar fashion with the Blazers leading 16-15 before a 3-point service run from Cruz Diaz to give the Blazers a 19-15 lead. The Bears kept fighting and evened the score at 23-23. A kill by Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA) gave the Blazers the win in extra points, 28-26. 

The third set began with back-and-forth action as the teams remained tied at 13-13. A late service run from Cruz Diaz gave the Blazers a 22-15 lead. A kill from Natalia Caraballo Rivera (Fajardo, P.R.) and an ace by Jensen closed the set 25-16. Elms won the match 3-0.

The visiting Colonials got on the board late in the opening quarter when sophomore Sydney Chenoweth found the back of the net. WestConn stretched the lead to 2-0 when senior Nora Swift took a pass from classmate Alessia Callahan.

Elms 3, Westfield State 0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-15)

Elms game out blazing from the service line as Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.) put the Blazers up 8-1 and Laura Jensen (Torrance, CA) extended the lead to 13-3. Despite a late service run of their own, the Blazers lead was too strong as they took the set 25-17.

The second set saw the Blazers stay hot as Lozada went on a 8-point service run to give them a 13-2 lead. A late run by Rosado sealed the set 25-8. 

The third set remained close as the Blazers only held a 2-point lead mid-way through at 13-11. The Blazers strung together two late service runs from Lozada and Cruz Diaz respectively, to take the set 25-15 and the match 3-0. 

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Elms 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-16)

- Elms dominated the service line in a straight set win over Bridgewater posting a 15-4 advantage in aces.

- The Blazers were led by Cruz Diaz and Caraballo Rivera who both registered double-digit kills, 13 and 11 respectively. Diaz added five aces and Rivera landed four. 

- Lozada controlled the defense for the Blazers picking up 18 digs.

- Rosado connected for 35 assists, three kills and two aces.

Elms 3, Westfield State 0 (25-17, 25-8, 25-15)

- Diaz posted another double- digit kill total (10) and Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA) added nine kills, two digs and three block assists for the Blazers. 

- Lozada and Rosada matched game-high digs with 12. 

- Rosado coordinated the offense with 28 assists. 

- The Blazers continued their dominance on the service line adding another 13 aces, finishing the day with 28 in six sets.
