Blazers Strike Down Falcons

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College Blazers blanked non-conference opponent Fisher College in Picknelly Arena yesterday evening, 3-0.

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Blazers came out hot from the service line as they broke open the first set 5-1 from Natalia Caraballo Rivera (Fajardo, P.R.). Leading 12-6, Govanna Rosado (Humacao, P.R.) pushed the lead further as she went on a service run of her own to up the Blazers 15-6. Despite a late push from the Falcons, another service run, this time from Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.) put the Blazers up 23-13. A pair of kills from Cruz Diaz and Caraballo Rivera sealed the set 25-14. Elms went up 1-0 in the match. 
 
The second set was much tighter as the Blazers and Falcons traded service runs. The set saw 10 ties between the teams, with the last one at 23-23. The Blazers capitalized on a kill from Sabrina Christie (Agawam, MA) and a Falcon error to take the set 25-23. Elms went up 2-0 in the match. 
 
The third set remained close until a service run from Kiana Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.) gave the Blazers a 16-15 lead. A couple traded points later, the teams were tied at 17-17 until 4 back-to-back kills from Christie and Caraballo Rivera gave the Blazers a 23-18 lead. Christie went on to ace the Falcons for set point and give the Blazers a 25-19 win. Elms won the match 3-0. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Cruz Diaz led all players with 16 kills, hitting .306 on 36 attempts while contributing 1 ace and 14 digs. 
  • Ramos Figueroa led all players with 3 service aces and added 5 kills and 8 digs. 
  • Rosado led the Blazer offense with 33 assists and added 1 kill and 10 digs.

- The Blazers are back in action on Saturday 10/16, as they travel down the road to non-conference opponent Westfield State University for a trimatch against the Owls and Bridgewater State University for a 1PM start.
