Chicopee, MA - Elms College Blazers defeated the Albertus Magnus Falcons Thursday evening, clutching a 5-1 record on the season for conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first set saw the Blazers race out to a 6-3 lead with a service run from Kianna Lozada (Bayamon, P.R.). The Blazers and Falcons traded points until a service run by Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa (Boca Raton, FL) put the Blazers up 13-5. A pair of kills from Govanna Rosado (Humacao, P.R.) and Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.) saw the Blazers lead 24-14 before an ace from Rosado closed out the set 25-14.
The Blazers jumped out to a 6-1 lead with a service run from Natalia Caraballo Rivera (Fajardo, P.R.). The serving from the Blazers didn't loosen up as another run from Cruz Diaz saw the Blazers up 12-3. Despite a mid-set push from the Falcons, the Blazers held the lead and closed out the set on a pair of kills from Ramos Figueroa and Caraballo Rivera to take the set 25-11 and put Elms up 2-0.
The third set saw the Blazers behind as the Falcons opened the set with a pair of service runs that saw them up 4-2 and 9-3 respectively. A service run from Lozada helped the Blazers close the gap to 7-10. The Falcons held a 17-13 lead before a service run from Rosado and 6 straight kills from Cruz Diaz and Caraballo saw the Blazers take the lead 18-17. The teams traded points, including 3 ties, before the Falcons took the set in extra points 26-24. Elms led the match 2-1.
The fourth set began with back-and-forth action until the Blazers went up 8-6 on the heels of a Ramos Figueroa service run. More back-and-forth action ensued until a service run from Cruz Diaz put the Blazers up 17-14. A late 7-point Ramos Figueroa service run broke open the set for the Blazers to put them up 24-14. A Falcon error sealed the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Cruz Diaz hit a match-high .545 with 19 kills and 1 error on 33 attempts and added 2 aces and 11 digs.
- Ramos Figueroa added 12 kills on 25 attempts hitting .480 and added 13 digs and 3 aces.
- Caraballo Rivera added 13 kills, 3 aces, and 14 digs.
- Rosado led all players with 45 assists and added 4 aces and 6 digs.
