Blazers Drop to JWU in Conference Home Opener

Chicopee, MA – The Elms Blazers fell in conference action last night to the Johnson and Wales (Providence) Wildcats. The Wildcats took the match in straight sets defeating the Blazers 25-21, 25-20, and 25-14. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The first set saw the Blazers come out hot with a 3-0 lead on the heels of a Laura Jensen service run. The Wildcats were quick to tie it at 5-5 and each team remained within one of each other until 10-10. A Wildcat service run from Emily Corbett saw the Blazers down 11-15. Despite a late service run by Jaylianne Ramos Figueroa to push the Blazers to 18-22, they couldn't overcome the Wildcats who took the first set 25-21.
 
The second set remained close as the Blazers and Wildcats traded back-and-forth points to tie the set at 10-10. A Wildcat service run saw them gain a 4-point advantage until Alanys Cruz Diaz answered with a service run of her own, tying the game 17-17. An 8-3 service run closed out the set for the Wildcats who took the set 25-20 and led the match 2-0. 
 
The third set saw an early Wildcat service run from Kyra Hissner put them up 11-4. The Blazers fought for the next points from the front line including 2 kills from Sabrina Christie in four points that saw the Blazers down 6-12. Despite their efforts, the early deficit was too much for the Blazers and they fell to the Wildcats 14-25. JWU won the match 3-0. 
 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

- Christie led the Blazers hitting at .211 clip with 6 kills on 19 attempts. 
- Cruz Diaz led the Blazers with 8 kills on 25 attempts hitting .200
- Lozada led the Blazer defense with 19 digs

"Tough loss last night, JWU is a good team and we knew that coming in the game. I think we made too many mistakes on our end but now we can learn from this game and keep progressing as a unit."
 

UP NEXT:

- The Blazers are back in action on Wednesday, as they hit the road for a non-conference matchup against University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth for a 6PM start.
