Blazers Take the Weekend by Storm

Salem, MA - Elms College earned two wins on Saturday, 9/11 in a tri-meet match hosted by Salem State at Twohig Gymnasium. The Blazers defeated the Vikings 25-13, 25-23 and 25-17 before beating Northern Vermont-Johnson, 25-16, 25-10 and 25-11. The Blazers are now 4-3 on the season.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

ELMS 3 | SALEM STATE  0

The Blazers raced out to a 15-7 lead in set one receiving three kills from Alanys Cruz Diaz (Humacao, P.R.). Salem State managed just five kills in the first set on 34 attempts as an attack error by the Vikings gave Elms a 12-point victory. The second set was full of back-and-forth action that saw the Vikings up 18-17. A service error by Elms gave the Vikings a 23-21 lead, but the Blazers rallied for four straight points, featuring back-to-back kills by Cruz Diaz and Govanna Rosado (Humacao, P.R.). The third set was more back-and-forth until 15-14 before Elms went on a 10-3 to close out the match.The Blazers hit .385 in the third set to earn an eight-point win to secure the victory. 

 

ELMS 3 | NORTHERN VERMONT-JOHNSON 0

Cruz Diaz had six kills in the first set to lead Elms to a 25-16 win in set one. The Blazers broke open a close set, scoring five straight points following a kill by Jensen. Three straight errors, including a service error set up a clinching kill by Christie.

Elms cruised to an easy 25-10 in set two. Leading 11-4 the Blazers took advantage of multiple Badger miscues to build a 21-9 lead. A service error and three straight attack errors by Northern Vermont-Johnson gave the Blazers a 15-point win. Elms hit .444 during the set, which included three straight service aces by Ramos Figueroa.

Elms committed just one error in the final set to complete the sweep. The Badgers never threatened, trailing 18-9 after a service error. Kills by Ramos Figueroa, Jensen and Rosado ended with Elms winning 25-11.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Match 1:

·       Cruz Diaz finished with 16 kills and 12 digs

·       Jensen  finished with 11 kills and nine digs while Ramos Figueroa had nine kills, four aces and 13 digs

·       Christie contributed seven kills and a match-high 16 digs

·       Rosado paced the Blazers with 39 assists.

 

Match 2:

·       Ramos Figueroa had six aces in the match and 12 digs for Elms

·       Cruz Diaz finished with 13 kills and five digs

·       Rosado tallied 22 assists while Christie added nine digs.
