Women’s Soccer Takes Down Norwich in GNAC Action

Chicopee, MA – The Elms College women's soccer team won their third straight game on Tuesday night. The Blazers defeated Norwich University 4-1 on Leary Field in GNAC action.

THE BASICS:

SCORE: Elms 4 | Norwich 1

RECORDS: Elms (5-4-1, 4-3 GNAC) | Norwich (2-5, 1-5 GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Blazers got off to quick start, registering 3 corners in the first 3 minutes of the game. Elms continued to apply pressure on the Norwich net and opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Caroline Wilcox (Pomfret Center, CT) sent Elaina Vilar (Watertown, CT) in alone behind the Cadets backline. Vilar took two perfect touches and chipped the Norwich keeper, giving the home side a 1-0 lead. The rest of the half saw back and forth action and went into the break with Elms holding a 1-0 advantage.

Elms came out in the second half determined to add to their lead. The Blazers controlled the play and added to their lead in the 58^th minute. First year Kelly Malheiro (Long Island, NY) cut off a Cadets pass, Malheiro was then able to dribble past two defenders and fire a shot past the keeper, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead. Malheiro wasn't done, the first year picked up her second tally of the game at the 64:28 mark, giving the home side a commanding lead.

The Cadets cut the deficit to two 11 minutes later off a miscue by the Blazers backline and keeper. Elms regained their 3 goal advantage in the final minute of the game when first year Arianna Hamel (Wilbraham, MA) scored the first goal of her collegiate career.

Elms outshot Norwich 12 – 4 and held a 4 – 0 advantage in corners

Angela Picheo (Wood-Ridge, NJ) made 3 saves on the night
