Malheiro’s Brace Sends Blazers Past Salem State

SALEM, MA – The Elms College women's soccer team picked up another road win on Wednesday night at Salem State University. Kelly Malheiro (Long Island, NY) scored two goals and added an assist, leading the Blazers past the Vikings to a 4-1 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Caroline Wilcox (Pomfret Center, CT) put Elms on top early when she knocked in a loose ball just outside the box for a 1-0 lead. Malheiro scored her first of the night and her collegiate career when she beat the Salem State defense and laced a shot into the upper left corner of the goal, giving the Blazers a 2-0 lead just 5:31 into the game. Salem State cut the deficit in half at the 23:29 mark. The Blazers back line and sophomore keeper Angela Picheo (Woodridge, N.J.) stood tall, and sent the game into the break with a 2-1 advantage for the visitors.

Elms came out in the second frame and controlled the action. It didn't take long for the Blazers to extend the lead. Malheiro added her second goal of the game in the 48th minute when she hammered a shot from 22 yards out over the Vikings keeper of an assist from Morgan Foucault (Putnam, CT).  Hannah Duggan (Palmer, MA) added an insurance goal for Elms when she banged home a rebound in the 69th minute that made the final 4-1. This was Duggan's first collegiate goal.
