Women's Basketball Wrap Up 2023-24 Season at Lasell

NEWTON, MA - The Elms College Women's Basketball team wrapped up their 2023-24 season with a loss in their conference matchup against Lasell University on the road Saturday afternoon.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 52 | Lasell University 78
Records: Blazers 10-15, 4-10 (GNAC) | Lasers 16-8, 10-4 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Elms found themselves struggling on offense early, as the Blazers failed to muster a point in the first four minutes of the game. Elms finally got on the board courtesy of junior Soliyana Asfaw (West Orange, NJ) and senior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT), but Lasell scored with ease on offense and carried a 9 point lead into the second quarter. Asfaw and graduate student Julianne Liebow tried to keep Elms in the game with their offense, but the Blazers failed to make shots at a consistent rate. Elms fought back however, and a made layup by graduate student Brianna Metellus (Springfield, MA) cut the deficit to 5 points for the Blazers. Lasell did not let that deter them, and went on a scoring run to end the half up 36-21 on the Blazers. If Elms wanted to get back in the game, they would have to play tough defense and make more shots on offense.

Johnston and Liebow both made some two and three point shots to cut the Blazers deficit to 10 points early on in the third quarter, but Elms could not get closer. Lasell took advantage of the weak Elms defense and went up for 19 off of a flurry of scored baskets that the Blazers had no answer for. The Lasers extended their lead to 20 points, but Johnston made some baskets at the end of the third to bring the deficit to 58-40, with the Blazers needing a huge fourth quarter to come back. With a sizable deficit, the Blazers made no strides to close the gap, as offensively Elms shot around 24% from the field. With an inconsistent offense, the Blazers fell to Lasell 78-52.
