Rough First Half Leads to Blazers Loss

CHICOPEE, MA - The Elms College Women's Basketball team lost a conference matchup against the University of Saint Joseph (CT) at home Saturday afternoon in Picknelly Arena.

BASICS
Score: Elms College 49 | University of Saint Joseph (CT) 72
Records: Blazers 9-14, 3-9 (GNAC) | Blue Jays 20-3, 11-1 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Elms started off the game slow, falling behind 8-0 before they got some scoring contributions from senior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT) and junior Solyiana Asfaw (West Orange, NJ). The Blazers could not match the Blue Jays in scoring, as they struggled to make shots early in the first quarter. Saint Joseph extended their lead out to double digits late in the first quarter and carried that momentum into the second quarter. Graduate student Julianne Liebow hit a layup and a three pointer to trim the St. Joseph lead down to 12, but the Blue Jays went right back on another scoring run, determined to hang onto their lead. Elms found themselves down by 20 with a minute left in the first half, as they had no answer defensively. Going into halftime, the Blazers were down 39-17.

Elms tried to mount a comeback led by sophomore Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA). Uribe made a flurry of layups and free throws to try to shoot the Blazers back in the game against Saint Joseph. A couple of Blazers contributed to the offensive scoring, but the Elms defense couldn't stop the Blue Jays. Saint Joseph maintained a 20-point lead for the whole quarter, and were determined not to give Elms any momentum. Elms could not get any closer in the fourth quarter, as they did not have the offense to get back in the game. When the buzzer sounded, the Blazers had fallen to the Blue Jays 72-49.
