Women's Basketball Defeat Mariners on the Road

NEW LONDON, CT - The Elms College Women's Basketball team traveled to Mitchell College, and defeated the Mariners in a conference matchup.

Score: Elms College 62 | Mitchell College 49

Records: Blazers 8-7, 3-2 (GNAC) | Mariners 2-10, 0-4 (GNAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mariners started the contest with an early 2-0 score but would soon be taken over by Blazer first year Jade Lewis (Orlando, FL) after hitting a three-pointer. The two sides would continue to the quarter exchanging shots and causing turnovers, but Elms would maintain their lead, 13-6, heading into the first intermission.

The second quarter began with a steal from graduate student Brianna Metellus (Springfield, MA) which would assist senior Rahmia Johnston's (Trumbull, CT) three-pointer. During the remainder of the quarter, possession would trade between the conference foes, which saw a three-point play from Johnston, after being followed while making a layup with a minute and a half remaining in the half. As the half drew to an end, Elms would continue their lead 25-20.

Johnston would start the third quarter with three three-pointers (assisted by Lewis, Metellaus, and junior Soliyana Asfaw (West Orange, NJ)). The Blazers and Mariners would continue to trade points, Johnston would make an additional three pointer (assisted by sophomore Jenny Gorski (Vernon, CT)) to extend their lead. Elms would maintain their heading into the fourth quarter with a 45-33 lead.

The fourth quarter would start with a layup by sophomore Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA), which would then be followed by Mitchell bringing the game to within seven points, but Gorski would make a pair of layups to keep the Blazers within an arm's length ahead. The quarter would move on and the Mariners would foul multiple Elms players bringing them to the free-point line six times to end the contest with the Blazers winning by a score of 62-49.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Johnston would lead both teams with 25 points with five three-pointers made.

  • Mitchell's senior Yasmine Santos (Pawtucket, RI) would make 24 points with six field goals.

  • Gorski and Johnston both would lead the Blazers with eight rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Women's Basketball team returns to action at home on Thursday, January 18th hosting MCLA in Picknelly Arena at 7:00 pm.
