Blazers Beat Colby-Sawyer on the Road

New London, NH - The Elms College Women's Basketball Team won a conference matchup against Colby-Sawyer College on the road Wednesday night.

BASICS

Score: Elms College 59 | Colby-Sawyer College 52

Records: Blazers 7-7, 2-2 GNAC | Chargers 3-10, 0-3 GNAC

How it Happened:

On the road at Colby-Sawyer, the Blazers looked to win another conference game and move up in the standings. The Elms offense was slow at first, only mustering 4 points in the first 5 minutes. The Blazers defense held Colby-Sawyer in check, and late baskets by sophomores Talia Uribe (South Hadley, MA) and Jenny Gorski (Vernon, CT) cut the Chargers lead to 2 points after one. Elms would pick up their scoring in the second quarter, as baskets by Lebow, first-year Jade Lewis (Orlando, FL), and junior Soliyana Asfaw gave the Blazers the lead. Great team defense and tough rebounding kept Elms in the lead, giving them a 26-20 advantage at halftime.

Lewis and Uribe started off the third quarter with a pair of baskets to keep Elms in control. Colby-Sawyer went on a little scoring run to cut into the Elms lead, resulting in the Blazers having to call timeout to stop the momentum. Elms responded with baskets by Lewis and Gorski. Elms didn't let their lead slip away. They continued to play strong on defense, limiting the Chargers to one shot per possession. In the beginning of the fourth quarter, both teams couldn't score a basket, but Lewis, Lebow, and senior Rahmia Johnston (Trumbull, CT) picked up the scoring the Blazers late, giving them a comfortable lead in crunch time. Johnston would hit some crucial free throws and grabbed a plethora of rebounds, giving her yet another double-double on the season. A pair of Graduate Student Julianne Liebow made free throws gave the Blazers the 59-52 win.
